Synopsis

Caelan Vale was abandoned by his family and fiancée Alara, who favored his scheming brother Cassian. When Caelan was kidnapped, his desperate call for help was dismissed as attention-seeking; he died alone. In death, he became an apprentice reaper under the Ashen Dominion, tasked with ferrying 999 souls before he can rest. His final assignment reunites him with the four people who betrayed him: his parents Garrett and Evelyn, his brother Cassian, and Alara. They do not recognize him behind his reaper mask and continue to blame him for his own disappearance, praising Cassian. As Caelan escorts them to the Ash Tribunal, where the witness glass reveals all deeds, their past cruelties are exposed. Alara recalls how she dismissed Caelan's kidnapping call, and the family's favoritism toward Cassian is laid bare. Caelan remains emotionally distant, hardened by their betrayal, but Alara notices a birthmark identical to her fiancé's, leading her to confront him. The tribunal forces everyone to face the truth, but Caelan's journey is not just about revenge—it is about finding freedom from the people who once meant everything to him.

The phone buzzed against the cold warehouse floor. One bar of battery. Caelan Vale pressed call, and somewhere across town, his mother sighed like he'd interrupted something important.

"Caelan's birthday," she said. "You really have to do this now?"

He could hear the party behind her. Laughter. Glasses. His brother's voice, happy and safe. Caelan tried to explain he was going to die. The line went dead. Then, from Alara — his fiancée, the woman he was supposed to marry — came the sentence that followed him into the dark: "If you're so determined to disappear, then stay gone."

She got her wish. The kidnappers never got their ransom. Afraid of being caught, they tortured him and dumped him in a river. His body was found three days later. Nobody claimed it. Nobody held a funeral. Nobody remembered.

Three years after that, Caelan Vale stands on a ferry of the dead, wearing a reaper's mask, staring at the four souls he's been assigned to escort.

The Fiancée Who Asked the Reaper to Look Up Her Missing Fiancé

The woman standing in front of him doesn't recognize him from seven paces away. Alara has no idea she's speaking to the man she buried in her mind as a liar. She asks the reaper to look up a soul named Caelan Vale — and her voice drips with disgust.

He was selfish, she says. Two-faced. All because they threw Caelan a birthday party, he called claiming he'd been kidnapped, then vanished. She couldn't take it anymore. If she'd had a choice, Caelan would have been her fiancé.

Caelan keeps his mask on and his voice flat. Inside, the thought lands like a blade: The selfish, lying fiancé she despised was me. She had no idea.

The call she hung up on three years ago was his only chance at rescue. And here they are, dead now themselves — killed in a fire at Blackthorne Manor — still crowding around Caelan, still protecting him, still certain Caelan was the problem.

His father laughs when he asks about his missing son. "We're better off without a son like that." He wishes Caelan had been his firstborn. Caelan looks down at his own bluish, misshapen hands. His throat feels packed with sand. They still don't know who they're talking to.

The Witness Glass Doesn't Care How Good Your Story Is

The ferry docks at the Ash Tribunal. Caelan explains the rules: a witness glass shows everything you did in life, exactly as it happened, and then a judge decides where you go. It's not a threat. It's just what happens.

Caelan goes pale. Alara insists he's always been kind — what could he possibly have done? Caelan's mother mutters that Caelan was the vicious one, the one who'd come crying and ruin everything again. Caelan pulls harder on the oars and says nothing. He's already traded every merit he earned in three years of service for one thing: never seeing these people again.

The tribunal makes its point early. An enforcer drags a screaming man forward — a man who swears he spent his whole life doing charity. The glass shows him stealing relief funds and leaving shelter residents to freeze. The floor splits open, hands claw out of the pit, and he's gone. Alara calls it disgusting. Caelan answers calmly: only those who committed serious crimes or deliberately hurt others are punished. The innocent have nothing to fear.

Then Alara asks the question that changes the temperature of the room. What if someone lied their whole life, turned everyone against someone else, cost them everything — would they be punished?

Caelan freezes. He realizes she means him.

And then the glass starts showing the truth.

The Necklace, the Birthday, and the Birthmark

The memories come in pieces. A necklace Caelan saved for ages to buy, engraved with his mother's name on the pendant. It vanishes on her birthday. He spends the whole evening on edge. Then Caelan walks in holding the gift box. "Happy birthday, Mom."

"That's my necklace," Caelan says. "You stole it."

Alara stares at him with disgust. Caelan was just trying to belong. Did Caelan really have to fight him over one gift? She calls him low for accusing his brother. That was the moment Caelan should have understood: evidence meant nothing to them. If Caelan felt wronged, Caelan was guilty.

Then comes the memory of the call. Caelan trying to tell Alara he was going to die. "Caelan, stop. It's Caelan's birthday and the trust audit is a mess. I don't have time for this." She hung up. His life ended at twenty-six.

After he died, the reaper who met him asked what he couldn't let go of. He asked to see home one last time. What he saw: a table covered in candles, Caelan making a wish, his parents smiling and clapping — and holding the cake, Alara. The same woman who'd just claimed she was buried in a trust audit. The same woman who told him she had no time.

The judgment bell rings. Caelan's voice is flat. "The judgment has begun. Don't be late."

Caelan refuses to enter. He whines that if Caelan were here, he'd love watching him stand trial. His parents rush to comfort him — Caelan forced your hand, you have nothing to fear, he was going to die sooner or later anyway. Caelan has heard that too many times. He lived like a stranger in his own family, someone they could throw out at any moment. His one thought, staring at the ceiling: Given another chance, I'd cut every tie to the Vale name.

Then Caelan turns and studies the reaper's mask a little too closely. "You look like you came from money, and you're barely older than us. What kept you here? Someone you couldn't let go?"

Caelan answers honestly. At first he couldn't cross the bridge of oblivion — too much unresolved. But the other reapers and spirits treated him well. A stranger once gave him a bone lamp that never went out. Strangers cared more than his family or the woman he loved ever had. The old ache is gone now. All he feels is certainty.

Alara doesn't buy it. She tells him he doesn't get to talk about Caelan like that, that Caelan was her fiancé. And then the wind catches his sleeve and exposes the red birthmark inside his wrist.

She goes still. "How do you have the exact same mark as my fiancé?"

He doesn't answer. She reaches for his mask. "Caelan, how long are you going to hide from me?"
