Synopsis
Narissa has lived a life of betrayal. Born blind, she could see the true colors of souls: green for jealousy, black for hate, pink for love. She married Lazaro Orsini, the Don's least favored son, and used her gift to save him from assassins and win over the Cappos, making him Don. But Lazaro despised her, loved her sister Octavia, and ultimately forced poisoned wine down her throat. He then buried Octavia in Narissa's coffin and dumped Narissa's body into the sea. Now, Narissa has woken up back at the matchmaking dinner where she and Octavia were about to choose husbands. Lazaro, who also remembers the past, immediately proposes to Octavia, vowing to make her the next Donna. He looks at Narissa with disgust, confident he can become Don without her. But Narissa has kept a secret: she can still see everything around her and read souls. She watches as Lazaro proposes to Octavia, and the other guests pity Narissa. Her mother, Sabina, nearly reveals Narissa's secret gift, but Narissa stops her. Narissa observes the other Don's sons: Evo, vicious and calculating with a gray soul; Paolo, a womanizer with a scarlet soul. Only Lazaro's soul seemed normal, but she now knows he is a good liar. As Octavia pretends to generously let Narissa pick a husband, Lazaro taunts Narissa, offering to let her scrub his floors. Then, a man in a wheelchair arrives. His soul is pure, clear as crystal, with a faint golden light. Narissa is stunned, realizing this man is truly fit to be Don. She reflects that in her first life she chose the wrong man and crowned the wrong Don, giving him the chance to destroy her. Now, she must decide whether to trust this mysterious man and change her fate.
Narissa was born blind, but she never needed eyes to see the truth. Every soul glows a color, and she reads them all: green for jealousy, black for hate, pink for love—the deeper the love, the darker the shade. It's a gift that made her dangerous. It's a gift that got her killed.
The Colors That Never Lie
Narissa carries a private code behind her white silk blindfold:
- Green — jealousy, the petty kind that festers
- Black — hate, the kind that plans
- Pink — love, darker the deeper
- Gray — cold calculation
- Scarlet — a walking appetite
- Toxic purple — the color Lazaro's soul turned as her sister died
That last one is the wound the whole story opens with. Narissa spent her first life using her gift to spot assassins and win over the Cappos—all to crown Lazaro Orsini, the Don's least favored son, as Don. He repaid her by forcing poisoned wine down her throat, burying her sister Octavia in her coffin as "Donna," and dumping Narissa's body into the sea wrapped in an old tarp.
Then she wakes up. Back at the matchmaking dinner. Back where she and Octavia were about to choose husbands.
The Proposal That Stings Twice
Lazaro doesn't wait. Terrified Narissa might pick him again, he rushes to Octavia, drops to one knee, and swears she'll be the next Donna—no mistresses, no one else, only her. The guests shower Narissa with pity. She's blind. Even Lazaro doesn't want her.

Octavia blushes and milks it, glancing between the Don's sons like she's shopping. Narissa remembers exactly how that turned out last time: Octavia chose Crady, the underboss with a sick obsession, and he tortured her to death in bed within a few years. Lazaro remembers too—his face tightens with real pain as he proposes.
Then he turns to Narissa with disgust. "Glad you know your place," he sneers. "I wouldn't marry you this time, even if you begged."

Her mother Sabina clutches her cane, nearly blurting the secret—that Narissa can't open her eyes but could make any man she married the next Don. Narissa cuts her off before anyone notices. She keeps her cool. "I wouldn't marry you this time, even if you begged."
What Lazaro doesn't know: she kept one secret right up until her death. She can't open her eyes, but she can still see everything—and everyone's soul.
A Golden Soul in a Wheelchair
Octavia, smug and copper-red, plays the generous big sister. "Take your pick, Narissa. I'll let you have him." Lazaro jumps in to defend her honor by offering Narissa a job scrubbing his floors.
Then comes the sound of wheels.
A man in a fitted black suit rolls in—wheelchair-bound, tattoos above his open collar, legs still thick and muscular, a cool stare that sends heat through her. And his soul? Pure. Clear as crystal, with a faint golden light glowing inside. Narissa's breath catches. Her hands clench. Her mind goes blank.
"His soul mattered more pure, clear as Crystal."
This is a man truly fit to be Don. And she can't fully read him—which is either the safest bet at this table or the most dangerous one.

She thinks back to the life she lost: "In my first life, I chosen the wrong man. I crowned the wrong dawn, giving him the chance to destroy me." Not this time.
So now the real game begins. Lazaro thinks he can become Don without her. Octavia thinks she's won. And Narissa is sitting at a dinner full of gray, scarlet, and toxic purple souls, staring at the one color she's never seen before—and deciding whether to trust it.
