The Joke Girl’s Revenge Recap, Cast & Preview

Imagine hearing the boy you've loved for ten years call you "as fat as a bear" in front of a room full of people—then swear he'd never touch you unless you lost weight. That's the moment Chloe's world cracks open. And it's the moment everything starts.

The Insult That Broke Her (and Woke Her Up)

Chloe has secretly loved Dexter since they were kids. Ten years of quiet devotion. She even took an injury for him—and after that injury, her body changed. From there, Dexter began pulling away, one cold excuse at a time.

She'd finally worked up the nerve to confess on the day of the swim team's exchange program deadline. Instead, she overheard everything. A friend needled Dexter about lying to Chloe, and he shrugged it off: "She's as fat as a bear now. I don't want anything to do with her." Then came the knife twist—he made it clear he thought she was foolish for ever believing in him.

The laughter that followed felt like suffocation. But one voice in the crowd pushed back: "Chloe was stunningly beautiful before she got hurt and gained weight for you." Dexter's answer? Looking at her now made him sick.

That's the cruel irony at the heart of this story. The weight Chloe carries is proof of what she sacrificed for him—and he's using it as a weapon.

A Message to the Billionaire Brother

Here's where Chloe stops crying and starts moving. Not long after that humiliation, she sends a message to Dexter's older brother, James—a former swimming superstar turned billionaire who runs an elite pro swimming camp. Her words are simple and steel-edged: "I agreed to join your elite pro swimming camp."

Think about that flex for a second. The guy who just called her unlovable has a brother who sees a champion. James knows exactly who Chloe used to be—the team's most promising rookie before her injury. And now she's walking straight into his world to rebuild herself.

Meanwhile, Dexter isn't done being awful. When a friend warns him Chloe is on her way to confess, he sighs like she's a nuisance. He doesn't want to cut her off completely, though—he still remembers her as the pretty girl she used to be. Charming.

Then Sophia, the school's hottest queen bee, offers herself up as his girlfriend to make Chloe back off. Dexter's response is the line that should haunt him: "I don't date fat girls. Not unless she loses weight."

The Bar, the Kiss, and the Cake

Kelly, Chloe's teammate, drags her into the bar where Dexter and his crowd are gathered—and the room goes silent. Chloe ends up squeezed into the booth beside Dexter, and when she grabs a beer, he takes it from her with a fake-protective line about her getting even bigger.

The whole night is a minefield of old memories. A year ago, Dexter was different—red ears, a lakeside pier, a wish list that included telling Chloe he liked her. Now he won't even look at her.

Then the games begin. Truth or dare. Chloe is dared to kiss a boy and everyone assumes she'll pick Dexter. He tenses—but she refuses and takes the punishment drink instead. Next, Sophia gets the question: does she have a crush, and is he here? Yes and yes. Before Chloe can get a word out, Sophia leans in: "Dexter, I like you. Let's make this official." He agrees. The kiss is deep, the room erupts, and every eye swivels to Chloe.

She laughs right along with them. "Congrats." Sophia tells her to read the room and move over. Dexter catches Chloe's clenched fist and smirks—he knows she's barely holding it together. She grabs her bag to leave the whole mess behind.

And then the waiter walks over with the line that changes the temperature of the entire scene: "Chloe, the cake you ordered for Mr. Dexter is here."

A cake. For the man who just publicly chose someone else. The room is about to get very, very awkward—and Dexter is about to find out exactly how much Chloe was still holding onto.

If you've ever wanted to see the underdog rise and the shallow guy eat his words, this is the moment to watch.
