Synopsis

Mara Bennett relives the night she was eighteen, when drunk thugs dragged her toward the trees and Adrian Mersel arrived to save her. In her previous life, they fell in love, married, and lived happily, but that love ultimately destroyed Adrian. This time, she chooses to push him away. She leans into the leader's arms and tells Adrian she is going with them willingly, that she only played along because his family had money. Adrian is left stunned and heartbroken. After that night, Mara is nearly destroyed by the thugs, stays in bed for three months, misses her exams, and her father is beaten to death over debt. She drops out and works at the bottom for ten years while Adrian turns his family business around and becomes wealthy. At a high school reunion, Mara shows up uninvited and humiliates herself, acting like a dog for Adrian. He mocks her, and she barks for him. She begs him to let her stay, claiming she only wants money. Adrian makes her his dog, then takes Ivy Cross, her old bully, as his girlfriend and humiliates Mara publicly. He sends her to a studio to be mocked on air, where she goes viral as a joke. Despite everything, Mara never leaves. She asks to stay with Adrian for a day before his enemies Gage, Nolan, and others are released. He accuses her of wanting to show off at a gala, but she has a list of names with notes. She takes painkillers and an adrenaline shot, preparing for something. The story builds toward her taking the blade meant for him, revealing that every cruel word was a shield and every lie was love.

Mara Bennett wakes up in the winter she was eighteen. Drunk thugs are dragging her toward the trees. A shooting star cuts the sky.

She knows exactly what happens next—because she's lived it before.

In thirty seconds, Adrian Mersel will show up with a brick in his hand. He'll save her. Send every one of those men to prison. They'll fall in love, get married, live a happy life.

But that was her last life. And in that life, loving her destroyed him.

So when Adrian appears, brick raised, ready to be her hero again—Mara smiles. She leans into the leader's arms and says the words that will haunt them both:

"Adrian, stay out of it. I'm going with these guys because I want to. What's that to you?"

The thugs laugh. Adrian freezes. He tells her he knows she's scared, that she doesn't have to be. He reminds her of their promise—same college, together. He says he won't let them touch her even if he dies tonight.

She climbs on top of him to stop him. And then she goes for the kill.

"Get over yourself, okay? You really thought I liked you? I only played along because your family had money and could pay off my father's debt. But I don't need you anymore. These guys are a lot more useful than you."

She walks away with the men who are about to destroy her. And she can't stop herself from looking back. Adrian is still sitting there, stunned, staring after her.

Someone laughs. "Look at him. He really looks like a dog."

That night, the thugs nearly destroy her. She spends three months in bed. She misses her exams. Her father is beaten to death over debt—just like in her last life. She drops out. She starts working.

Ten years pass.

Ten Years of Hell, Alone

Mara works herself to death just to survive. She's stuck at the bottom, taking any job she can get, her body breaking down from old injuries that never healed right.

Adrian? He caught the right opportunity. Turned the Mersel family business around. The wealth multiplied several times over. He became exactly what she always knew he could be.

And then winter comes again. The high school reunion.

Mara shows up uninvited. She hovers around Adrian—pouring his drink, handing him things, acting as small and eager as she can. She needs him to let her stay. She needs to be close.

Adrian looks at her with cold, mocking eyes.

"Mara Bennett, you really do look like a dog."

The words hit her straight in the chest. It hurts so badly her heart shakes. But she doesn't show it. Instead, she barks for him.

The whole room explodes. Everyone jumps in.

She really has no shame. Adrian was the luckiest thing that ever happened to her, and she chose a bunch of street trash over him. Did she think that made her look good? To guys like that, she was just something cheap.

Mara says she regrets it. She was young, stupid. She didn't realize he was the one worth staying with. She'll do whatever he wants—just let her stay.

Adrian's voice is ice. "How did you become this? What the hell did I ever see in you? Why would I keep you near me?"

"Because you've got a good heart. You've always been the good one. Even after everything I said back then, you still didn't really let me crash and burn. You sent all those men to prison. So if you help me once, help me again. I'm working three jobs just to pay for my meds. But the more I work, the worse the old injuries get. The worse I get, the more money it takes. I really can't keep this up."

"So you came to me just for money, nothing else?"

What else could it be? Someone like her had no right to want anything else from him.

She slaps herself across the face. "You're right. Look at me like I dare ask for anything more."

Then Adrian strides toward one of the women in the room. Ivy Cross. The girl who used to lead the bullying against Mara back in school. He grabs her by the hair and kisses her hard.

"From now on, you're my girlfriend, and as for Mara Bennett, from now on, she's our dog. You can do whatever you want with her."

The Dog Who Wouldn't Leave

That night, Mara drinks until she blacks out. She wakes up in her apartment with her clothes a mess and no memory of how she got home. She drops beside the toilet and throws up until there's nothing left.

Her phone buzzes. Adrian: You home. Be up early tomorrow. You're coming with me to the studio. You've already sunk this low. No point hiding it. Now let everyone watch—it'll be fun.

He wants to turn her into a public joke.

Before she can reply, a transfer notification pops up. A large amount of money.

She sends back: Thanks for the money.

The typing bubble appears. Then disappears. Then appears again. She waits a long time.

Finally: When I sent those men away back then, it wasn't for you. They came at me. I was just hitting back. Don't flatter yourself. And this money isn't because I feel sorry for you. I just think this is entertaining. Call it tossing a bone to my dog.

Mara passes out.

She wakes to ice water soaking through her clothes. Her apartment is dark, damp, freezing. Ivy has dragged her out of bed, impatient. On the way to the car, Ivy touches her forehead and realizes Mara has a fever. So she deliberately pulls off Mara's outer layer.

"Even if you're sick, you're still going to that studio today."

In the car, Ivy keeps talking. She explains why she bullied Mara back then—it wasn't just because Mara was poor and easy to push around. It was because Ivy saw that Adrian liked her.

Why should someone like you get his attention? I thought if I pushed you hard enough to make you drop out, he'd forget you. But I didn't expect him to protect you. The more I went after you, the more it pulled him closer. By the end, he was completely hung up on you. Lucky for me, you were stupid and greedy. You handed everything that should have been yours straight to me.

Adrian slips an engagement ring onto Ivy's finger. Right in front of Mara.

When he sees how pale she is—silent, no reaction—he scoffs. He reaches for the heat controls. Then stops.

"So, Mara Bennett, if this is what you are all the way down, then the second you realized you picked the wrong side, you should have come back to me. Why did you wait ten years?"

In the rearview mirror, Mara sees his eyes. There's something buried deep in them. Hope, maybe. Even now, he's still waiting. Waiting for a reason.

She looks out the window instead. At her apartment building. At the old calendar on her wall. One date marked hard.

In seven days, Gage, Nolan, and the others would get out.

At the studio, Adrian and Ivy take turns with the cruelest words they have. They paint her as a pathetic woman who ruined herself. After it airs, Mara goes viral—a joke everyone knows. Adrian wants to know if she has any bottom at all, so he lets Ivy use the same old bullying tactics. But he never finds it. Because no matter what they do, Mara doesn't leave.

The List, the Blade, and the Truth He Never Saw Coming

The day before Gage, Nolan, and the others are released, Mara finally asks Adrian for something.

"Tomorrow. Can I stay with you for the whole day?"

Adrian's jaw tightens. "What is it you hear? I'm about to get engaged to Ivy, and suddenly you can't take it. I thought you didn't care about anything except money."

Before she can answer, a folded piece of paper slips from her coat. A list of names. Each one has notes beside it—personality, preferences, money.

Adrian picks it up. "So that's what this is. You want to stay by my side for a day because you want to go to the gala with me and show yourself off to those men."

Her silence nearly pushes him over the edge. He grabs her by the throat.

"Fine. You want to go? I'll take you. Mara Bennett, I want to see if you really have the nerve to show up tomorrow."

The next day, Ivy takes Mara to pick out a dress under Adrian's orders. Before leaving, Mara takes a heavy dose of painkillers. She brings the adrenaline shot with her. The drugs force a little strength back into her nearly ruined body.

Everything she has endured was for today.

Ivy smirks. "You don't seriously think anyone would want you looking like this, right? Then again, who knows? Adrian put together a big surprise for you. My suggestion, by the way."

Mara doesn't flinch. She's been waiting ten years for this night. The night when the men who threaten Adrian walk free. The night she finally stops pretending.

Because every cruel word she ever said was a shield. Every lie was love.

And Adrian still doesn't know the truth.
