Synopsis
Willa Greyclaw has always been the overlooked middle child, despite earning the Distinguished Service Award. Her sister Myra is the favored one, and her brother Slate and parents dote on Myra. On the day of Willa's award ceremony, Myra's graduation party is held, and Willa is attacked by three coyotes who claim Myra sent them. Willa's spirit leaves her body and watches her family celebrate, ignoring her absence. Myra sends fake concerned texts while secretly mocking Willa. Willa's boyfriend Rowan dismisses her desperate call for help, believing she is seeking attention. As the night progresses, Myra manipulates a prank gift to burn her hand and blames Willa, further turning the family against her. Willa's spirit follows Myra to the clinic, where Rowan accuses Willa of viciousness and threatens to cancel their engagement. Willa's spirit returns home, where the housekeeper discovers her body. The family's indifference and Myra's lies are exposed, but Willa's spirit remains trapped, watching as the truth begins to unravel.
While her family toasted Myra's graduation upstairs, Willa Greyclaw was dying in the basement—and no one came looking.
What does a ghost do when she's the only one who knows the truth? If she's a decorated evidence technician, she starts collecting clues. Even dead.
The Party Upstairs, the Body Downstairs
Willa Greyclaw spent her life being the overlooked one. Her sister Myra was the family's treasure. Her brother Slate got the pride. Her parents saved the warmth for everyone but her.
So on the night Willa should have been glowing—she'd just earned Beast City's Distinguished Service Award, handed out once every two years—she came home first and walked straight into an ambush.
Three coyotes were waiting. They pinned her arms, shoved her into a wall, and dragged her into the basement. One dangled a little snowflake keychain in her face. Myra's keychain. Willa recognized it instantly, and her blood ran cold.

The message was simple: "Myra handed this over, said somebody ought to give you a scare. Stop stealing her spotlight."
Then they left her there in the dark. Willa begged. She promised to be good. She admitted the one thing she'd never told anyone: she was terrified of the dark.

Upstairs, the party kept going.
The Sister Who Plays Perfect
Here's where it gets vicious. Willa's spirit drifted out of the basement at midnight and found her family doing what they always did—forgetting her.
Slate barged into her room, annoyed she wasn't there. He flipped through her journal and found one thing written inside: 99. The number of times they'd let her down. He didn't understand it. He just tossed the journal aside and left a voicemail: "Stop the stupid games. Myra wants your homemade cookies. Get back here and make them."
Then Myra drifted over, wearing her mask of concern. "What if something really happened to Willa?" she cooed. "Maybe I should text her."
What she actually typed was: "Hope those coyotes rough you up a little. Maybe then you'll stop stealing my spotlight."
She deleted it. Then she typed a new one—all sweetness, all worry—and held up her phone so the whole family could see what a caring sister she was. Mom pulled her into a hug. "You're always so kind, Myra. Willa is just being immature."
Willa laughed bitterly. No one heard.
And when Willa's calls for help went out—every family member had her location and emergency alerts—they declined. Mom texted: Drop the act. We don't have time for your drama. They removed her from the family group. From the emergency contacts.
Only her boyfriend Rowan picked up.
"Help me, Rowan. I'm dying."
His answer: "Willa, cut the drama. It's Myra's big day. There's a limit to your attention seeking."
The Gift That Burns and the Lie That Sticks
Myra wasn't done. At the party, she opened a gift near her bedside table—then shrieked. A red burn mark bloomed on her palm. A prank gift. One that burns.
"Please don't blame Willa," Myra said, eyes wide and wounded. "The gift was on my bedside table this morning. I'm just happy she gave me a present."
That was all it took. Slate: "I knew it. She was plotting to hurt Myra." Dad slammed the table and kicked the box. Mom called Willa vicious. And when Myra grabbed Slate's arm, urging him not to go because the doctors would ask questions, the family rushed her to the hospital instead of searching the house.
If Slate had taken one step toward the basement, he would have smelled the blood.
At the clinic, Rowan burst in and grabbed Myra's hand. The more understanding she acted, the darker his face grew. He called Willa and left a message: "Willa, how could you be so vicious using a prank gift that burns on your own sister?" He threatened to cancel their engagement and told her she didn't deserve the heirloom gift he'd been bringing her.
Willa listened to every word. Her heart was too weary to even feel it.
What the Living Miss—and What the Ghost Sees
Here's the thing about Willa: she's an evidence technician. It's literally her job to notice what everyone else walks past. And as a spirit, she's collecting everything.
She remembers the Academy placement day that decided everything. Slate tested into the leadership track. Myra was the fastest runner in her group—"the family's treasure." Willa stepped onto the platform hoping to make her parents proud. Average strength. Average speed. No standout talent. From that day on, she was the family's "common one," not worth investing in—even after she earned the highest academic honors.
She watches Myra boast about her internship at a top investment bank. She watches Mom plan to move new clothes into Willa's closet because "she never buys new clothes, she doesn't need the space." She watches them save her a tart slice and call it fairness.
And then, finally, someone notices. The housekeeper, hearing the commotion, comes out to clean up the mess. She finds what the family never looked for.
"Miss Willa, why do you never learn to protect yourself?"
The truth is cracking the perfect family image wide open. But Willa's spirit is still trapped—and the conspiracy behind her attack is bigger than the people who raised her.
