Synopsis

In her past life, Alara was mated to Yannick, the eldest serpent prince, but gave birth to nine deformed hatchlings. Yannick, enraged, gave the hatchlings to the Phoenix clan for blood alchemy and handed Alara to the old Phoenix king as a plaything. Unable to bear the humiliation, Alara burned herself alive. She wakes up on the day of the mating selection, reborn. Yannick, also reborn, chooses her cousin Sienna instead, leaving Alara to be claimed by Zarek, Yannick's feral masked uncle. Zarek is rumored to be unpredictable and refuses to take a mate, but he claims Alara to protect her from Yannick's plot to send her to the Phoenix clan. Alara discovers Zarek is the true Abyssal King and that Sienna's child is cursed. As Yannick's bloodline rots, Alara plots her revenge and rises to rule the beast realms by Zarek's side.

Alara remembers everything from her past life—the nine deformed hatchlings she bore, the way Yannick handed them to the Phoenix clan for blood alchemy, the way he gave her to the old Phoenix king as a plaything. She remembers burning herself alive rather than endure another second of it.

Then she opens her eyes. She's back on the day of the mating selection, standing in the serpent palace, and Valerius is speaking as if nothing happened.

The Day She Gets a Second Chance

Alara was an ancient spirit lynx. Her cousin Sienna was a common bobcat. In the past life, Yannick chose Alara and Orion chose Sienna—and that single choice sent them down completely different roads. Sienna birthed a breathtaking white serpent and became future queen. Alara birthed nine deformed hatchlings and burned to death.

This time, Alara knows she has to keep Yannick from choosing her. But before she can figure out how, Yannick walks right past her with a look of disgust and picks Sienna instead.

That's when it hits her: he's reborn too. He remembers the "ugly" hatchlings, and he's not making the same mistake twice.

Alara instinctively grabs Sienna's hand and shakes her head—a silent warning. Sienna yanks her hand away. "Are you jealous that the noble Yannick chose me?" she snaps.

Fine. Alara decides to respect her cousin's fate.

But then Orion rejects the mating too, claiming he's too young to take a mate. Alara's actually relieved—she can go home, live as a princess, maybe pick a handsome lynx warrior. Easy.

Then a man steps out from the back hall. Bone mask. A crown of obsidian scales framing his face.

It's Zarek—Valerius's youngest brother, the feral uncle everyone whispers about. The one who refused to take a mate. The one who never showed up at this event in her past life.

"Valerius, this lynx female is so beautiful," Zarek says, his dark eyes locked on Alara. "You only let my sons pick. That's a bit biased, don't you think?"

Yannick can't help himself. "Uncle, don't let this female lynx's pretty face trick you. An unblooded whelp like you has no right to question my choices."

Zarek doesn't even flinch. "Who I claim is not for an unblooded whelp to dictate."

And just like that, he carries Alara back to his den.

The Masked Mate Who Won't Touch Her

Here's the thing nobody warned Alara about: Zarek keeps the mask on. Even at night, completely alone, it stays on. He lays a thick blanket down the middle of the stone bed and tells her, "Sleep on the inside. I'll sleep on the outside."

No mating. No touching. Alara hugs the blanket, genuinely confused. Serpents are notoriously lustful—Yannick tormented her endlessly in the past life, even when she was sick. So what's Zarek's deal?

He seems to read her mind. His face goes cold. "Stop having wild thoughts. I took you as my mate because I pitied you. If I didn't claim you, do you know where you would be right now?"

That's when Alara realizes the truth. Yannick doesn't want her dead—he wants her gone. The moment she leaves the serpent palace, he'll send her straight to the Phoenix clan, using her to gain the old king's favor. Zarek claimed her to keep that from happening.

The next morning, Zarek drags her out of bed to greet Valerius. Sienna is already there, glowing with happiness, legs trembling, red marks all over her neck. She takes one look at Alara's pity and mistakes it for jealousy.

"I wonder how your night went, Alara. I heard Uncle Zarek didn't even touch you."

Valerius somehow already knows they haven't consummated the mating. "Zarek, what is the meaning of this?"

Zarek doesn't miss a beat. "I thought she looked decent yesterday, but when I looked at her at night, I got bored."

Later, Valerius summons Alara privately and orders her to bear Zarek's heirs as soon as possible. When she returns, Zarek's eyes are ice. "What did Valerius tell you?"

She tells him everything. He goes quiet, then says: "Avoid meeting Valerius privately in the future. If anything comes up, push all the blame onto me."

His relationship with Valerius is as mysterious as his mask. But before Alara can dig deeper, news explodes across the clan: Sienna is pregnant, and her belly is radiating a potent aura.

The Showdown That Changes Everything

Yannick is ecstatic. He invites the entire clan to witness it—including Alara.

Sienna immediately tries to humiliate her. "I am carrying a royal heir now. Could you help me pick that up?" She's barely a month pregnant and acting like she can't bend her waist.

Yannick piles on, mocking Alara as a barren little mutt playing dress-up. Before Alara can snap back, a sharp gust of wind sweeps the moonstone up and smacks Sienna right in the face.

"Are your arms broken?" Zarek asks. "She just asked a liar to pick something up. Why are you so angry?"

Yannick loses it and shifts into his massive serpent form. But he's all show—Zarek plays with him, and Yannick can't even hold his ground. He makes a total fool of himself in front of every serpent present.

"Just wait until my pure white serpent is born and inherits the throne," Yannick spits, grabbing Sienna and fleeing.

But Yannick is petty and vengeful. The moment Zarek is absent, he ambushes Alara on the rocky hillside, summoning a paralytic miasma that numbs her limbs and forces her to her knees. He only shows himself once he's sure she can't fight back.

"Uncle still hasn't touched you, has he?" Yannick sneers. "Your genetics might not be good enough for a queen, but you're still good enough to be a breeding slave."

He releases her, smug. "Once Zarek finds out you can only give birth to ugly, deformed freaks, let's see if he still protects you."

But Yannick doesn't know something: Alara cast illusion magic on him. They're standing right in front of the king's council chamber. Every word he said reached Valerius and the other clan leaders.

"Yannick, you have truly disappointed me."

He's confined. His rewards are confiscated. The untouchable heir apparent becomes an absolute nobody overnight.

Zarek is furious—not at Yannick, but at Alara. "Do you have any idea how dangerous that was? What if he had actually choked you to death?"

She didn't tell him about her past life, so he doesn't understand why she had to strike first. But then his voice softens. "Don't do something so dangerous ever again. At the very least, you should tell me. I am your mate. It is my responsibility to protect you."

And for the first time, something warm blossoms in Alara's chest.

The Birth That Exposes Everything

The night Sienna goes into labor, the wind howls and dark clouds swallow the sky. The clan shaman declares it the sign of a supreme obsidian serpent. Valerius himself rushes to the den to witness his powerful grandson's birth.

Sienna labors for an entire night. The screams stop. But no one brings the hatchling out.

Valerius barges inside. Silence.

The order comes down to lock down the den. Sienna gave birth—but not to a pure serpent. It's a small, deformed, venomless yellow python with dull scales and no fangs. A venomless python has inherently terrible genetics. It could never become a powerful serpent. And for some reason, it has a huge, ugly red mark on its face.

Valerius takes one look and leaves without even giving it a name.

Alara is so happy she eats several extra roast chickens. In the past life, Sienna and Orion produced a beautiful white serpent. With Yannick, she produced a deformed yellow python. The problem was obviously his bloodline—and everyone can see it now.

But Valerius isn't done. The next morning, he starts seeking a new mate for Orion. And then he orders Alara to conceive a royal heir within a year.

Zarek is the true Abyssal King. Sienna's womb is cursed. Yannick's bloodline is rotting from the inside. And Alara is standing right next to the one man everyone else is too arrogant to see clearly.

If you love a good "you'll regret this" moment, dive into this story and watch the tables turn.
