Synopsis
Eight years ago, Veyne was sold out by her own brother Valen, who drugged her wine, and her fiancé Zrun, who switched the carriages on their bonding day, leaving her exiled beyond the city walls. She survived in the borderlands, raising eight children—each secretly of royal blood. When Valen and Zrun finally track her down, they find her dirty and surrounded by 'strays,' and they demand she return home, intending to dispose of the children. Veyne refuses, and the children's true identities begin to slip: the White Tiger Marshall's daughter, the Golden Lion Duke's daughter, the twin Griffin princes, and a boy with a black dragon scale—proof of direct Obsidian throne lineage. Mira, Veyne's sister, who has long painted Veyne as a liar, twists the truth, claiming the children are fakes and that Bran, the soldier who saved Veyne, is the husk she was sold to. Zrun, blinded by Mira's manipulations, orders Bran beaten and allows Veyne to be tortured—cut once for every child she claims. Bleeding and near death, Veyne's memories of the betrayal resurface: the drugging, the switched wagons, and Zrun taking another mate on the very day he swore to bond with her. Despite the pain, Veyne stands her ground, determined to protect the children who kept her alive, as the children's royal parents are summoned and the truth edges closer to the surface.
Eight children. Eight cuts. One exiled mother who refuses to let go—and a crown heir who has no idea what he's actually looking at.
Valen and Zrun ride into the borderlands expecting a broken woman and a pack of dirty strays. They sneer at the "lowly bastards" clinging to her. They don't know who is watching from the branches, who is glaring from the grass, or that the smallest boy wears a black dragon scale.
Every one of these "strays" could topple a throne. And the man who wronged their mother is standing right in front of them.
The Night They Sold Her
Eight years ago, Veyne thought she was getting her happy ending. Her hands shook so badly she could barely braid the bonding cord into her mane. She was so happy she couldn't breathe.
Then her brother Valen drugged her wine. Her fiancé Zrun switched the carriages on the road out of the city. She clawed at the wagon doors until her nails were ripped to the meat, begging to know why—why today, of all days.
They wouldn't even let her back through the gates. Crown heir's orders. And while she was dragged outside the wall, horns blared and crimson silk rained from every tower. The man who swore to bond with her for life was taking another mate.
"Eight years ago, my own brother Valen sold me to a husk. After I fled, I lived in exile for a full eight years."
That's the wound underneath everything. It explains why she won't move—not for threats, not for blades, not for the crown heir himself.
Meet the "Strays" the Court Wants Dead
Valen and Zrun find Veyne at the edge of the shadow, dirt on her face, eight little ones crawling all over her. Valen's eyes go red. He used to say she'd die before she raised a child. She doesn't answer—just chews her pine resin and keeps her jaw tight.

Then Mira steps out from behind him, wet-eyed and trembling. She tells the story of how Valen drugged the wine, how Zrun switched the carriages. But when Zrun speaks, it's not an apology. It's a dismissal.

Eight years of exile, waved away as if it were nothing. And then the order: the whelps aren't coming. They're filthy, low-blood strays. Let the guards put them down.
That's when the truth starts leaking out, one child at a time.
The girl up in the tree is The little lion girl, the only daughter of a great house. The blonde glaring at Mira carries a golden lion sigil that can command an army with one token. The two in the grass are The twin Griffin princes, sons of the Griffin King. And the smallest boy, Leon—the one Zrun cuts when he lunges—wears a black dragon scale pendant. Only the direct line of the dragon throne wears one.
"They're not mine, and you can't touch them. Crown heir or not."
Zrun's answer is a flat denial—his uncle has no child—and he raises the blade again. The little lion girl rips free and shoves her golden sigil at him, daring him to test her. Mira slaps it into the dirt and laughs. A cute trick, she says. Very cute.
Eight Cuts, One Mother
Here's where the story turns ugly. Mira loops her arm through Zrun's and whispers poison—that Veyne is coaching the children to pretend they're royal blood, that if the king hears of it, the whole house is finished. Zrun believes her. He always believes her.
Bran, captain of the border garrison, the man who pulled Veyne out of the snow eight years ago, rides in to stop it. Mira points at him and gasps: that's the husk. I thought you were dead. No wonder she wouldn't come with us.
It's a lie. Bran saved her. But Zrun's eyes go dark and cold, and he orders Bran beaten as an assassin. The guards tear into the gray wolf while Veyne screams that he saved her life. Nobody listens.
Then comes the punishment. Every whelp she keeps, she gets cut once. Same number, fair. Veyne doesn't beg.
"Eight cuts won't kill me. Eight years—their parents kept me alive. I owe them."
The first rake goes in. Then the second, third, fourth. Valen explodes that she still owes the house. Four more rakes. She pushes herself up, spine straight, soaked in cold sweat. Then someone notices the blood and asks the question that changes the room: is she pregnant?
Zrun's head snaps around. He orders it gone. Guards force her stomach forward. A boot drives into her. She blacks out from the pain—and the pain drags something else up with it. The memories she buried. The drugging. The switched wagons. The crimson silk.
"The man who swore to bond with me for life—he was taking another mate."
The Fifteen-Minute Gamble
Veyne isn't stalling for nothing. She's counting. Fifteen more minutes—that's when the pickups come, same time every day. The hour she'd usually be walking home, light on her feet. Bran was sent to find the children's royal parents, the ones who bear the dragon king's mark. If they arrive, the whole court's story collapses.
But Bran came alone. The rest of the unit is out putting down a riot, and whoever the Griffin King sent for his sons isn't getting through either. Zrun sneers: does she love them that much? Would she really die for them?

And that's the question hanging in the air as the blood spreads. Will the royal parents reach the border in time—or will Zrun and Mira bury the truth before it ever sees daylight?
"You just hurt royal blood. That's a death sentence."
Mira's answer is a slap and a laugh. But the little ones aren't laughing. The little lion girl threatens the guards. The twin Griffin princes swear their father will hear about this. These children know exactly who they are—and they're not scared of a crown heir.
