Synopsis
Elara Veyne, a witch from one of the oldest and wealthiest families in Asterfell, dies alone in a magical sanatorium after her family and fiancé betray her. In death, she meets a Veil Witch and trades her ability to love for a second chance at life. She wakes up four years before her death, back at the Veyne estate, with her twin brother Cassian standing before her. The day Cora, her adopted sister, arrives, Elara feels nothing—the witch kept her promise. In her first life, Cora's arrival marked the beginning of Elara's downfall: her parents' attention shifted, Cassian forgot her, and her fiancé cheated with Cora. When Elara confronted them, they called her unstable, Cassian blasted her with a curse, and her parents sent her to a sealed ward where she died. Now, Elara refuses to play their game. She packs her valuables, including the phoenix-feather wand Cassian gave her, into a warded trunk. At dinner, Cora sits in her chair, and there's no seat for Elara—but instead of causing a scene, she drags a chair to the far end and eats in silence. When her father asks her to repeat a year of magical study for Cora's sake, Elara tilts her head and says, 'She needs two personal servants just to attend class.' Meanwhile, Dorian Crowe, the boy who loved her in her darkest life, remembers everything and wagers his own heart to give Elara back her ability to love.
What would you give for a do-over?
Most of us would say "anything." Elara Veyne actually named her price—and it was the one thing that made her human. She walked into a soul shop after dying alone, looked a mysterious Veil Witch in the eye, and traded away her ability to love for one more shot at life.
The witch warned her it wouldn't come cheap. Elara didn't flinch. Her parents had chosen their adopted daughter over her. Her twin brother had hated her. Her fiancé had cheated on her. And after all of that, they just watched her die.
"So take it," she told the witch. "Love has brought me nothing but pain."
Deal done. Second life granted. And that's where things get deliciously messy.
The Girl Who Came Back Without a Heart
Elara wakes up at the Veyne estate—one of the oldest and wealthiest wizarding families in Asterfell—four years before her death. Her twin brother Cassian is standing right in front of her, and for a second it's almost normal. He's teasing her about zoning out, asking if the new sister has arrived.
But Elara remembers what that same hand will do to her in four years: blast her with a nerve-burning curse.
The front doors open. Her father Alistair, the Minister of Magic Affairs, and her mother Seraphine, Headmistress of Elderere Academy of Magic Arts, walk in with a thin girl between them. Cora. The adopted sister who took everything.

Here's the gut-punch backstory: Cora's father died shielding Elara's father from a lethal curse, and her mother was already gone. So the Veynes took her in. Sounds noble, right? Except in Elara's first life, Cora's arrival was the beginning of the end. Cassian forgot her in an instant. Every present meant for Elara somehow ended up in Cora's room. Cora even snapped Elara's phoenix-feather wand in half—the one Cassian bought her at twelve with his junior skyball championship gold—then burst into tears about how she'd never owned a wand made just for her.

Cassian shoved Elara into her room and told her to stop upsetting Cora over "one stupid wand." The wand he gave her. That one.
And the worst part? When Elara caught Cora kissing her fiancé beneath the moon-vine arch and confronted them, they called her unstable. Cassian raised his wand and blasted her into a bed of iron thorns. Her parents shipped her to a sealed ward for witches deemed magically unstable. She died there alone.
Now she's back, and something is different. When she sees her family, there's no pain—just a faint, empty tingle. The witch kept her promise. "I could no longer love them," she realizes, "which meant they could never hurt me again."
That's not a tragedy. That's armor.
No Seat at the Table
The family freezes when Elara refuses to greet Cora. Her mother tries to coax her over. Everyone waits for the explosion.

But Elara doesn't give them one. She goes upstairs and packs everything valuable into a warded trunk—the phoenix-feather wand goes in first. She's not planning to stay, and she's not planning to lose her things again.
Then comes dinner. Cora is sitting in Elara's chair. Her mother is piling honeycakes and frostberries onto Cora's plate, cooing about sugar-moon apples from the ministry conservatory. Elara looks around the table.
There is not a single seat for her.
She looks at her mother and asks, flat as a blade: "Am I eating on the floor?"
The room goes silent. Her mother stammers that she forgot to tell the house-elf to add another chair. Cassian snaps at Elara to stop scaring Cora—and their parents don't correct him. They just watch, waiting for the scene.
In her first life, she gave them one. This time she drags a chair to the far end of the table and eats in silence.
That quiet moment is somehow more brutal than any screaming match. She's not the jealous monster they want her to be. She's just done.
The Wager She Doesn't Know About
Her father catches her as she stands to leave. Cora has fallen a year behind since losing her parents, he explains, so Elara and Cassian should repeat their current circle with her. Cora needs her family beside her. Cassian already agreed.
There it is again. Throw away an entire year of magical study for Cora.
In her first life, Elara agreed. She gave up her place in the advanced magic track and repeated the year. Then her childhood fiancé joined their class, and from that day the three of them turned every day at Ravenhill Academy into a nightmare—whispering that Elara was jealous, unstable, cruel, while Cora played the sweet victim in public.
This time, Elara tilts her head at her parents and delivers the line of the night: "She needs two personal servants just to attend class."
Cold. Precise. Devastating. And she's not wrong.
But here's the twist Elara hasn't seen coming. Dorian Crowe—the boy who loved her in her darkest life—remembers everything. Every betrayal, every lonely deathbed moment. And he's not willing to let her live this second life heartless. He's about to wager his own heart to give Elara back the ability to love.
Which raises a question that should make you nervous: what happens when the girl who traded her heart away starts feeling again? And what did Dorian risk to make it happen?
There's also a darker thread hanging in the air—whispers tied to her father's fate that the story hasn't fully resolved. Nothing is confirmed, and that's exactly why it's worth watching.
Elara thinks she's untouchable now. No love, no pain, no weakness. But a boy who remembers her worst life is betting everything that she's wrong.
If you had one do-over, would you trade your heart for it? Tell me in the comments—and then go watch Elara's choice.
