Synopsis

Sadie, a plus-size intern, has been bullied by Vanessa for years. In high school, Vanessa humiliated her by stealing her diary and spreading it. Seeking revenge, Sadie created a fake online profile using Vanessa's name and photos, and catfished a man named Callan. Their relationship grew deep over three years—he was sweet, generous, and paid off her student loans—but he was also intensely flirtatious. When he insisted on meeting, Sadie, terrified he'd reject her real body, ghosted him. Now, Sadie and Vanessa are interns at Tali Group, a front for the Vitale crime family. On their first day, Callan visits and immediately notices Vanessa, believing she is his lost love. He promotes Vanessa to be his secretary, while Sadie is left to do menial tasks and face workplace bullying. Vanessa lies to coworkers, implying Callan has been searching for her. Sadie is heartbroken but stays silent. One night, she accidentally ends up driving Callan's car and is shocked to find him in the back seat. He doesn't recognize her, but their close proximity is charged. The next day, Vanessa returns, claiming Callan sent her back to make friends. At a team karaoke night, Callan unexpectedly shows up, and Sadie is stunned to see him there.

She's staring at her phone when the world tilts sideways.

A photo. A blurry reflection in a window. And there he is: Callan Vitale — the man she spent three years loving through a screen. The man she ghosted. The man who is now her boss.

Standing beside him in the photo, glowing like she owns the place, is Vanessa Blake. The bully who made Sadie's life hell. Now playing the role of Callan's lost love.

Sadie's stomach drops. Because she's the one Callan fell for. But Vanessa's face is the one he's looking for.

The Perfect Crime (That Went Horribly Right)

Rewind. Sadie was bullied for years by Vanessa, the most popular girl in school. The humiliation went deep — Vanessa even had Sadie's own mother, who worked as a housekeeper for Vanessa's family, steal Sadie's diary and plaster its pages all over school. The whole school laughed. Vanessa laughed loudest.

So Sadie got revenge the only way she could: she stole Vanessa's name and photos and used them to catfish a rich guy online.

She didn't expect to fall for him. Callan was sweet, generous — he paid off four years of her student loans — and, okay, very flirtatious. Late-night calls turned into something deeper. "Good girl, keep going," he'd murmur. "Just imagine that's mine." She'd blush and snap back that he was shameless, but she never wanted him to stop.

Then she found out who he really was. Callan Vitale. A name that could shut down a country. The country's most feared mafia don.

And he wanted to meet her.

The Lie That Ate Everything

Here's the problem: Callan had fallen for Vanessa's name and Vanessa's face. Sadie had been pretending the whole time. Every whispered secret, every late-night call, every moment she felt truly loved — it was all built on a lie. Even her name was fake.

She looked in the mirror and saw the truth she couldn't escape: she wasn't thin like Vanessa. She wasn't effortlessly glamorous. She was the bigger girl everyone overlooked. Without Vanessa's identity, Callan Vitale would never have noticed her.

So she sent one message — "I'm sorry" — and blocked him. Deleted him. Vanished.

Three days later, an email arrived with a single sentence: "Vanessa, please don't leave me."

She never answered.

The Boss Who Doesn't Know He's Looking at Her

Three years later, karma comes calling. Sadie and Vanessa end up as interns at the same company — Vtalo Group, the legitimate face of the Vitale crime empire. On their first day, the boss visits.

Sadie stands at the very back. Then she sees him. Callan. Her heart stops.

A cufflink slips from his wrist and rolls to a stop beside Vanessa's heel. He walks straight past Sadie — straight to Vanessa — and stares at her like she's the only person in the room. "Vanessa," he says quietly, almost like the name hurts.

Vanessa's face flushes. She plays along perfectly. Within minutes, she's telling coworkers they grew up in the same town, that lots of guys had crushes on her. "Maybe he's been looking for you all these years," someone gushes.

And Sadie just stands there, invisible, watching her bully steal the one thing that was ever truly hers.

It gets worse. Callan promotes Vanessa to be his secretary. Sadie is left doing everyone's grunt work — fetching coffee, finishing folders, absorbing casual cruelty. "Sadie, move," Vanessa says sweetly as she struts past. "Mr. Vitale wants me upstairs. You're in my way. Keep working. Maybe you'll get up there in ten years."

Sadie says nothing. She just steps aside.

The Car Ride That Changes Everything

One night, Sadie stays late finishing everyone else's work. A short, stocky assistant with round black glasses appears. "Why are you still here this late?" he asks — then doubles over with stomach pain. He shoves a set of keys at her. Can she drive Mr. Vitale's car home?

She can't say no. She takes the keys. She gets in the car.

And then she realizes someone is already in the back seat.

Callan. Relaxed, almost lazily sexy, eyes closed. Probably been drinking. Sadie freezes. She can't run — that would look like she stole something. "Mr. Vitale, hi," she stammers. "Your assistant got sick, so he asked me to drive your car home. I didn't know you were already inside."

He doesn't recognize her voice. Why would he? But then she can't find the ignition. She fumbles. She picks at her fingers — her nervous habit since childhood. She feels his eyes on her hands. The car goes very quiet.

Then he's right beside her ear, his familiar citrus scent surrounding her. "You don't know how to start it," he says. His breath brushes her skin. She can't move. Then he calmly sits back — he was just showing her how.

When they reach his estate, she bolts. "Good night," she calls, not waiting for an answer. Behind her, Callan's eyes narrow.

The Party Where the Truth Starts to Crack

The next morning, Vanessa is back on the intern floor, glowing. "Mr. Vitale told me to come back down," she announces. "He said I was new and needed time to make friends." She hooks her arm through Sadie's, playing the loving coworker. Sadie knows that act. Vanessa is about to screw her over somehow.

That night, the team throws a karaoke party. Everyone assumes the boss won't show. "Mr. Vitale is busy," the manager says. "You think he's coming to this party with us? Relax."

Sadie arrives late, after spilling something on her skirt. She pushes open the door.

And there he is. Callan. Still in that black shirt, the shifting light sweeping across his face, holding a barely touched whiskey. He swirls the glass lazily — and Sadie's heart stops all over again.

He came. For the party. For her? Or for the woman he thinks she is?

One thing's certain: the game is far from over. Vanessa is still wearing Sadie's identity like a stolen crown. Callan is still searching for a voice he doesn't know belongs to the woman standing right in front of him. And Sadie is still hiding in the shadows, terrified that the truth will make him walk away forever.

But shadows don't last forever. And a man like Callan Vitale doesn't like being lied to.
