Look, the Phoenix Tamer’s holding a chick!

“Look, the Phoenix Tamer’s holding a chick!”
The snickers echo off the academy walls—sharp, cruel, and utterly convinced.
Bai Shihan stands there, small and steady, cradling a fluffball no bigger than her palm. Her sleeves are frayed. Her rank badge is tarnished. And in her hands? A creature everyone calls “waste.” A chick.

Then—ping.
A quiet, digital chime cuts through the noise:
[DEVOURING COMPLETE. EVOLUTION TRIGGERED. PHOENIX BLOODLINE: AWAKENING…]

No one hears it but her. And Xiao Huang.

Xiao Huang isn’t nuzzling her palm—he’s waiting for her to look away

He hates being called “chick.”
He hates how she nearly smothered him in panic during their first meeting—“Sorry, sorry—I didn’t notice!”—and whispered that apology like it cost her breath.

But when no one’s watching? He presses his warm, downy head into her open palm. Just once. Just long enough for her thumb to brush the softest feathers at his crown.

She doesn’t wipe his dust with a cloth. She uses the clean inside of her sleeve—like cleaning something sacred. Not a beast. Not a tool. A secret.

When Senior Xiaoxue grabs her arm, voice cracking—“You’re throwing your life away on that?”—Bai Shihan doesn’t flinch. She says, voice steady:
“He’s not waste. He’s legendary-tier. They just lack eyes to see it.”

Xiao Huang hears it. Inside, he mutters: This foolish girl worries about me while barely surviving herself.

That boulder didn’t fall on her—it fell for her

They’re heading into the Back Mountain—low-tier zone, high risk, zero backup.
She’s weak. He’s still tiny.

Then—a boulder cracks loose from the cliffside above her. She doesn’t dodge. She stares, calculating the angle.

He moves first.

A blur of yellow—tiny wings flapping wildly—not up, not away, but into the path of falling stone. He slams into it mid-air, staggering under the impact, beak gritted, tail feathers flared wide.

He doesn’t remember how to fly.
But he remembers her wrist. Her voice. The way her sleeve smells like rain and iron.

So he shields her.
Before he remembers why.
Before he even knows how.

Trust the chick.
Watch them rise—feathers first, fire later.
