Vanessa doesn't ease into cruelty. She leans against Ethan like she owns him and goes straight for the throat — not the physical one, the family one.

The whole table stares at Avery. Ethan's smile freezes. Seconds earlier he'd been bragging about her looks, her family. Now he says nothing.

"Really? How much does that pay?"

Avery answers anyway: "A little over 300,000 last year." Someone nearly chokes on his drink. Vanessa bursts out laughing — then her eyes slide over Avery's dress, and she decides the number must be a lie.

That's when the wine glass tips over. Red wine splashes across Vanessa's dress, and her eyes fill with tears almost instantly. She looks straight at Avery. Ethan doesn't ask what happened. He doesn't ask if Avery's okay. He turns to her and tells her to apologize.

The Night He Wasn't There

The party game is where it cracks open. Everyone has to share the craziest thing they've ever done for a friend, and Vanessa's hand shoots up.

She grins at Ethan and reminds him about the night she got wasted at a birthday party, called him crying, and he drove three hours back to the city. Stayed all night while she threw up. Made her breakfast the next morning.

Two photos appear side by side. The woman on the right is Avery. The woman on the left has different eyes, a wider nose, a heavy jaw. Vanessa announces it as proof: before and after plastic surgery. Avery has never seen that woman in her life. "That's not me."

Ethan takes the phone. He works in design — he knows photo manipulation better than anyone at that table. He studies the lighting, the shadows, the edges. "It's not edited," he says.

Avery fires back: "I didn't say it was."

She asks him to send her the photo, because she's going to find out where it came from. He grabs her wrist. Hard.

She tells Vanessa to stay out of it. Ethan steps between them. His hand comes up.

She built an entire identity out of pieces of Avery's old public posts, never realizing whose life she was wearing.

Another message arrives: they traced the before-surgery photo. They know who the woman is. Avery types back one word — who — then looks across the ballroom at Vanessa and almost smiles. She texts her investigator: come to the gala, bring everything. She doesn't expose Vanessa yet. Not because she can't. Because Vanessa is still talking, and every word is evidence.
